Duties and Responsibilities
Contribute to the mission of the Liu lab to elucidate the roles of mitochondria in the development of cardiac and muscle diseases.
Primary duties include:
75% experimental work to lead a project(s) in the lab
Using genetic mouse models to determine how (dys)regulation of mitochondrial processes contributes to cardiac physiology and pathology
Working at multiple scales (from isolated mitochondria to in vivo) to characterize mitochondrial functional parameters (e.g. Ca2+ handling, respiration), cardiomyocyte contractility, cardiac function, etc.
Developing and optimizing new protocols
15% publication and presentation of data
Maintaining accurate records
Communicating findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals
Preparing and giving presentations at local and national meetings
10% training of lab personnel
Contributing to the training of junior personnel (undergraduate and graduate students, technicians) in the lab
Fostering a safe, collegial, and inclusive workplace environment
PhD in the Life Sciences (e.g., Molecular Biology, Genetics, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Physiology, Biophysics)
Willingness to handle mice and mouse tissues
Experience with basic techniques in molecular biology and biochemistry (e.g., qPCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry)
Motivation and ability to learn unfamiliar or new techniques
Experience in cardiac and/or mitochondrial biology
Experience working with rodents, particularly mice
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a team
Ability to work independently and think critically about experimental design and interpretation
Familiarity with basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Graphpad Prism, Adobe Illustrator); bioinformatics/computational skills a plus
