Chair, Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology  

McGovern Medical School – UTHealth Houston

The Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology (IBP) at McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston, is seeking an accomplished investigator and leader to serve as its next Chair. This is an exceptional opportunity for a world-class scientist to lead a basic science department in the Texas Medical Center. Investigators with a track-record of funded research in cell biology, physiology and pharmacology are encouraged to apply. 

 Since the department’s infancy, IBP has cultivated a strong reputation for conducting innovative research focusing on the molecular mechanisms and dynamics of cell regulation and communication in various diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular biology, tissue regeneration, neuronal signaling, inflammation, and gastrointestinal and renal physiology.  Comprising over 100 FTE’s, the department currently has 34 faculty members (13 full, 8 associate, 9 assistant professors, and 4 instructors) with 26 independent principal investigators.  IBP has a robust track record of securing significant grants from NIH, DoD, and the American Heart Association. This success is reflected in the substantial $7.1 million in grant funds awarded to the faculty during fiscal year 2023. In addition, IBP faculty actively contribute to the institution’s educational mission through several capacities, including the NIH-funded Training Interdisciplinary Pharmacology Scientists (TIPS) program, teaching medical and graduate students, and mentoring postdoctoral research fellows.

Potential candidates for the Chair of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology position should hold a Ph.D. in cell biology, physiology, pharmacology or a related field. Excellent faculty mentoring experience, prior academic leadership experience and credentials to allow appointment as a senior-level faculty member are required. Prior experience teaching graduate level programs and/or medical students is desired. The ideal candidate will have a high level of emotional-intelligence, superb written and verbal communication skills and the ability to invoke a spirit of collaboration to continue to propel the department forward on achieving its mission and goals.
