Eastern Virginia Medical School, a school of the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, is pleased to announce a national search for the inaugural Chair of the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences.
Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) was established in 1973 as a community institution in Norfolk, Virginia. Known for its leading efforts in reproductive medicine, the first US in vitro fertilization (IVF) baby was conceived and born here, EVMS has grown to include research in contraception, high risk pregnancy, infectious diseases, pediatrics, geriatrics, diabetes and cancer. On July 1, 2024, EVMS integrated with Old Dominion University (ODU), an R1 research institution, to create the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University— the largest health sciences center in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The new Chair will be an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary scientist with an established track record of federally funded research and a deep knowledge of future innovative directions in education, discovery and research. The inaugural Chair will arrive at the birth of an exciting new era of strategic growth and will be charged with spearheading the new department’s vision and implementation of initiatives that will propel the department in its journey of excellence. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to articulate and execute a vision, recruit additional faculty, and build upon the existing strengths of the legacy Departments as well as those of the newly created health sciences center. The new Chair will possess the skills required to build and lead an educational and research enterprise as well as inspire and support faculty, staff and trainees in their pursuit of excellence. The Chair will be responsible for the department’s overall management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and programs and must be operationally experienced and with business acumen to manage operations, grow programs and maintain fiscal stability. Importantly, the Chair must ensure professionalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong leadership and interpersonal skills required to build cohesive and synergistic relationships that advance the department's mission and demonstrate passion for mentorship, recognize the importance of faculty and staff well-being and be a model of commitment to the department’s academic missions.
Qualified candidates will hold a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent from an accredited institution in biomedical sciences and/or related field. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor level in the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University.
