The Position:
The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member Biology (Human Anatomy & Human Physiology focus), specifically to serve Majors transfer and Health Sciences students. Along with your Biological acumen, the ideal candidate will share the Colleges commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
At our college we strive to serve and ensure the success of all students, because of our location in a significantly racially and socioeconomically diverse area, many of our students will be racially and socioeconomically diverse. It is up to our faculty to make sure that all of these students are successful.
The anticipated start date for this position is Fall 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s)of any particular position. Teach medium to large sized lecture/lab sections of biology courses with a primary focus on Biology Majors; including Human Anatomy & Human Physiology, Health Sciences, Biotechnology and Microbiology
Maintain office hours, use learning management systems such as Canvas, and build learning communities
Develop and practice effective teaching strategies that foster success in students with diverse backgrounds, learning differences, interests, and abilities
Develop and maintain expertise in the biological sciences discipline through professional development and participation in professional societies. Faculty will integrate this learning into the curriculum, classroom and campus community
Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development, department planning, and program review
Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment, and technology that will enhance offerings of the Biology Department
Participate, on an ongoing basis, in the assessment and analysis of student learning outcomes
Provide one-to-one and small group support to students at regularly scheduled times
Serve as a member of division and college committees
Teach courses in various modalities such as face-to-face day and evening classes, online, hybrid, or hyflex as required by the college
Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs
Plan, participate and help/mentor as an advisor for student clubs, activities and undergraduate research
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a Masters or above in any biological science OR Bachelors in any biological science AND Masters or above in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent (see below)
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom
Physical Requirements: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Subject matter preparation:
Recent successful experience in teaching general education/non-majors, majors general biology, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology and human biology in a community college
Experience developing and teaching inquiry-and research-based labs
Experience in clinical settings is preferred but not required
Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:
Enthusiasm for, and understanding of, the role and purpose of the community college
Ability to evaluate ones pedagogy and its effectiveness in facilitating student learning
Ability to teach both in-person and online courses effectively
Demonstrated experience in using various methods to assess student success in the classroom/lab
Ability to use teaching methods that engage students, promote critical thinking, and emphasize cooperation and collaboration
Experience addressing differential achievement rates among students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds
Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:
Initiative, and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success
Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through contributions to your profession, and college/department and division, activities
Preferred Qualifications:
Willingness to use multiple measures to gauge student success and participation in the class and labs
Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Biology; specifically, Human Anatomy & Human Physiology
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Biology courses and classrooms
Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
Willingness to examine and amend ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
