The laboratory of Dr. Dr. Steven S. Welc, within the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology and Center for Musculoskeletal Health at the Indiana University School of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral to study the pathophysiological mechanisms of skeletal and cardiac muscle adaptation in conditions of aging, exercise and disease. Our ongoing NIH-funded research includes investigations into the regulatory effects of fibroblasts on cardiac myocytes in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The laboratory uses state-of-the-art technologies and tissue-specific mutant mouse models to examine the molecular mechanisms that underlie dystrophin-deficient cardiac remodeling. The project is collaborative and multidisciplinary with excellent opportunities for advanced training and scientific development.
The applicant must be highly self-motivated, able to design and conduct experiments independently, analyze and interpret results, read literature, present work at meetings, write scientific manuscripts, and speak and write fluently in English. Candidates should be able to function well independently and in a small group. US citizens or permanent residents will have the opportunity to compete for NIH-funded training grants, but this is not required.

Doctorate or terminal degree required. Applicants must possess a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree and a strong background in biomedical research and preferably musculoskeletal or molecular biology. Prior work experience in transgenic and knockout mouse models, cardiac phenotyping, molecular and cell biology techniques, cell culture, biochemistry, histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics are highly desirable.
