Michigan Medicine's GI Physiology and Manometry Laboratory is recognized by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society as a leading center for Gastro-Intestinal Motility and Neurogastroenterology clinical training. This laboratory is used as the standard for developing and expanding motility operations at external academic centers. The GI Physiology and Manometry Laboratory offers comprehensive diagnostic testing to evaluate the entire gastro-intestinal tract (https://www.med.umich.edu/gi/patients/mpu.htm).
The GI Physiology Technologist provides GI diagnostic testing for a diverse patient population (neonates to geriatric), location (laboratory to operating room), and patient status (outpatient to inpatient). This wide spectrum entails a diverse technical acumen to perform, acquire, and edit high quality GI diagnostic testing. Additionally, the technologist position assists in clinical research and bio-medical engineering projects. On-the-job training will be provided to assist in developing the skills necessary to be successful in this position.
Performs technical skill duties in all GI tests and procedures ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards and procedures.
Provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling and techniques of specialty instrumentation.
Meets with patient and parents to explain GI testing procedures.
Prepares equipment and supplies for Hydrogen Breath Tests, Manometric tests (Esophageal, Small Bowel, Colon, and Anorectal), pH probes (Standard, Wireless pH, Impedance), capsule studies (Video Capsule Endoscopy, Patency, and Wireless Motility Capsule), and additional aspiratory studies.
Tests and calibrates all equipment to be used during the GI procedures to ensure accurate functioning.
Conducts and/or participates in formal in-service programs regarding the care of the GI patient.
Educates patients and their families in various testing and treatment methods.
Collects, documents, and reports specific data to appropriate medical provider.
Fills out appropriate paperwork to assure accurate hospital and physician billing.
Tracks and orders disposable and reusable inventory necessary for the day-to-day operations of the GI Physiology and Manometry Laboratory.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

A Bachelors degree in Biological/Health Sciences or related field.
One year of patient care experience
Previous experience working in a medical charting system is preferred.
Clinical laboratory experience.
Intubation experience.
Proficiency with venipuncture including starting IVs.
Coursework or experience with statistics.
Ability to move equipment, approximately 20 pounds, and patients.
Strong communication skills, including written and verbal communication.
Ability to work in computer systems.
Demonstrated strong attention to detail skills.
Ability to work with a well diverse patient and clinical population.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
